The final conference of the Joint Programme “Democratic and Inclusive School Culture in Operation (DISCO)” was held online on December 1.

Key results and impact of the projects implemented during the 6th cycle of the Programme were presented by all projects’ partners. Overall, 11 projects were funded (out of more than 100 applications) and 21 organisations in 15 different countries were involved in 2020-2021.
At least 3,000 people were reached through activities that span from publications and translations to local and national workshops and trainings, research, reviews, toolkits, online courses and international conferences.

Find the full list of funded projects here, and visit each project webpage to find out more about the materials produced. Topics covered include: Digital education and literacy, sports and inclusion, the prevention of radicalisation, managing controversy and service learning.

Despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, projects were able to successfully adapt and implement their various activities, often having a wider outreach than anticipated thanks to the shift to online events. More importantly, projects have been actively sharing best practices and cooperating with each other, but also with local, regional and national authorities, and even with international stakeholders in some cases. Thanks to this cooperation, several results are being brought to the policy level, which will ensure their sustainability.

To cite a few of the results achieved, the Ministry of Education and Science in North Macedonia has decided to include resources from the Council of Europe and from the project “School curriculum and teaching controversial issues – developing effective practices for teaching and learning approaches” into their upcoming official formative documents on managing controversy.

Under the project “The Rights Understanding in Sport Toolkit”, online modules on promoting human rights education in and through sport developed by the consortium have been embedded nationally and internationally into training offers. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees appreciated the modules and commented: “We were really impressed with the content, noting that it gives a great overview of the issues in an accessible and pacey format”.

These few examples show that the projects funded under the DISCO programme were only a starting point. From the created resources and new partnerships established, many follow up actions are already planned for the coming year, and these will further contribute to the promotion and continued development of citizenship and human rights education in Europe, beyond the scope of European Union/Council of Europe Joint Programme DISCO.

DISCO provided support to the 50 States Parties of the European Cultural Convention in integrating the CoE education acquis, policies, and tools in education systems and promoting Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education (EDC/HRE). Since the beginning of the Programme in May 2013 as a pilot scheme under the name of "Human rights and democracy in action", the Programme funded projects in 38 countries and supported 102 organisations.
