Safe and Inclusive schools for all: Project results presented at international conference on protecting LGBTQ children from violence and bullying

Kyiv 18 October 2019

The results of the project “Safe and Inclusive Schools for all: Together we can learn better” were presented at the III International Conference of parents and allies of LGBTQ persons on “Inclusive education: countering bullying and violence against LGBTQ children” that was held in Kyiv on 28-29 September.

The project “Safe and Inclusive Schools for All: Together we can learn better” was funded by the European Union/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Democratic and Inclusive School Culture in Operation (DISCO)” and implemented by the NGO Fulcrum UA. The project aimed at contributing to the development of an inclusive school environment in Ukraine.

Within the framework of the project, the Council of Europe publication “Addressing violence in schools through education for democratic citizenship and human rights education” was translated into Ukrainian and was distributed to 200 schools in Ukraine.

The NGO Fulcrum UA also carried out the National School Climate Survey in Ukraine with the support of GLSEN (USA) and presented the results at the conference.

“Being locked inside your community as in the bubble is not constructive. It is wrong to lose opportunities to find allies outside. You always need to look for the key, the code, the person who will believe in you and support you” emphasised Tymur Levchuk, executive director of the NGO Fulcrum UA, addressing the participants of the conference.

The conference was organised by the NGO Fulcrum UA and the Civil Organization Parents Initiative TERGO and brought together 130 participants from 14 countries including parents and relatives of LGBTQ children, educators, psychologists, scientists and LGBTQ activists.

Speakers included representatives of the Civil Organization Parents Initiative TERGO (Ukraine), the World Childhood Foundation (Sweden), PFLAG (USA), Aufklärungsprojekt München e.V. (Germany) and RFLSL (Sweden).

The conference was supported by the European Union/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Democratic and Inclusive School Culture in Operation (DISCO)”, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kyiv, the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine, Freedom House Ukraine, Munich Kyiv Queer and Mercury Phoenix Trust.
