Promoting media literacy from an early age: “Media and emotions” presented in Belgrade

The new publication “Media and Emotions” was presented at the City Library of Belgrade, marking another step in strengthening media and information literacy among preschool educators, in support to the ongoing media literacy programme implemented by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media in Serbia (REM).

Designed as an educational resource for preschool teachers, “Media and Emotions” introduces creative and age-appropriate methods for developing emotional awareness and critical understanding of media messages among children. The guide combines pedagogical insights with practical examples, helping educators integrate media literacy into everyday learning and play.

The publication was presented to 25 preschool educators and education specialists who discussed the importance of early-age media education to instil critical thinking skills with youngest members of our society.

By supporting initiatives such as this, the Council of Europe contributes to fostering critical thinking, empathy, and responsible media use from an early age, in line with its broader work on education for democratic citizenship and freedom of expression.

The publication in Serbian language was produced through the Action “Protecting freedom of expression and of the media in Serbia (PROFREX)”, implemented by the Division for Cooperation on Freedom of Expression under the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
