Understanding rights, finding support: An awareness-raising activity for children on the move

Twenty five migrant children participated in a child-focused awareness-raising activity in Ankara aimed at helping them become more familiar with their rights and freedoms. The event was organised in cooperation with the Ombudsman Institution and the Minus 25 Association, combining expertise in child rights and inclusive, participatory approaches.

The awareness-raising activities were built around games, creative exercises, and interactive sessions. These methods introduced children to key themes such as equality, protection, education, identity, and freedom of expression, while encouraging curiosity and active participation. Learning took place through play, dialogue, and shared reflection.

In addition to raising awareness of children’s rights, the session also provided child-friendly information on how children can apply to the Ombudsman Institution of Türkiye. Through practical examples and simplified explanations, children learnt when, how, and why they can contact the Ombudsman, helping them understand that there are accessible mechanisms in place to support and protect their rights.

Throughout the day, children were encouraged to express themselves, ask questions, and connect the topics discussed with their own experiences. By creating a safe and engaging space, the activities supported children in building confidence and recognising the importance of their voices.

The action “Strengthening the Human Rights Protection in the Context of Migration in Türkiye”  is part of the European Union and Council of Europe joint programme on “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
