To ensure the awareness and raise the skills of police officers in preventing ill treatment, two local trainers delivered the first of a series of cascade trainings to twenty of their colleagues on 17-18 September in Podgorica. The cascade sessions assist Montenegrin police forces to come closer to Council of Europe standards and follow the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture recommendations, as well as to build strong safeguards against ill-treatment.

Upon completion of the training program, participating police officers will be better equipped to identify cases of ill-treatment, understand their role and be able to prevent and report cases of ill-treatment. The training puts emphasis on real-life scenarios and case-studies, in order to facilitate the application of the acquired knowledge in practice and, eventually, lead to better protection of the rights of apprehended persons.

The training is part of the Action “Enhancing human rights protection for detained and sentenced persons in Montenegro” in the framework of the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
