Back MEDIA ADVISORY: Conference “Implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights: practices and challenges of the courts in Central and South-East Europe” to be held in Belgrade

The conference “Implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights - practices and challenges of the courts in Central and South-East Europe” will be organised under the joint European Union and Council of Europe action “Strengthening the effective legal remedies to human rights violations in Serbia” in co-operation with Supreme Court of Cassation, on Thursday and Friday, 15 and 16 September 2022, in Belgrade.

Introductory remarks will be given by:

  • Jasmina Vasović, President of the Supreme Court of Cassation of the Republic of Serbia
  • Snеžana Marković, President of the Constitutional Court
  • Маја Popović, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Serbia
  • H.E. Emanuele Giaufret, Ambassador, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia
  • Christophe Poirel, Director of Human Rights Directorate, Council of Europe

The conference will provide a platform for discussion among the judicial stakeholders on the impact of the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on judicial practices of national courts, on challenges and good practices in implementation of case-law of the ECtHR, in particular in the domains of freedom of expression, right to impartial tribunal, acquisition and deprivation of property rights, fight against organised crime as well as access to courts and the highest courts. The conference will bring together judges of the European Court of Human Rights as well as presidents and judges from the highest courts from the Central and South-East Europe (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Serbia).

The conference will begin on 15 September 2022 at 09:30 at Hotel Metropol Palace in Belgrade. The introductory remarks are open to media. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

The conference will be organised within the action “Strengthening the effective legal remedies to human rights violations in Serbia”, a part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, implemented by the Council of Europe.
