Supporting the role of the youth field and the inclusion of young refugees

Starting in 2016, the Partnership between the European Commission and the Council of Europe has developed initiatives related to the role of youth work for the inclusion of young refugees. In the expert seminar “Journeys to a new life” in November 2016, a set of key messages and proposals were developed.
In 2017, the EU-CoE youth partnership continued its work to develop knowledge and enhanced the exchange of practices on the role of the youth sector in supporting young refugees.

Two workshops on the role of youth work in the inclusion and participation of young refugees

The workshops were organised in Strasbourg, France, 2–4 October 2017, and Thessaloniki, Greece, 4-6 December 2017.

The main aim of the workshops is to create a space for learning about approaches that youth work and youth policy use for supporting the inclusion and participation of young refugees.

During each workshop, the group of participants:

  • Identified challenges related to youth work with young refugees and ways to address these challenges, particularly on the following themes: intercultural dialogue and learning, access to social rights, involving young women, participation in local life, autonomy
  • Analysed a local practice of youth work and/or youth policies supporting the inclusion and participation of young refugees
  • Had the space to exchange views with young refugees and with other youth sector’s practitioners and network
  • Identified support measures needed for youth work with young refugees.

The workshop enhanced the creation of knowledge about practical approaches youth work can adopt in supporting the inclusion and participation of young refugees. A collection of good practices complemented the workshop outcomes. All this was collected in the publication Step by Step together.
