The best way to inform workers is to meet them as often as possible and thus provide them with information about their rights and ways to protect themselves from labour exploitation and potential trafficking for the purpose of labour exploitation. This was the main message of the online launching of the campaign “Labour rights - Now! Awareness is the first step towards protection of your labour rights!” held on July 27, 2020.
Legal framework, practice and challenges in combating trafficking in human beings for the purpose of labour exploitation were presented by the civil society organisation Astra Anti-trafficking Action, grantee of the action "Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in Serbia”, at the kick-off event of the raising awareness campaign on labour exploitation. The aim of the campaign is to inform people and in particular groups at risk as the youngsters on how to protect and recognise the traps of traffickers for the purpose of labour exploitation, as well as to inform victims about their rights and types of available assistance.
Working conditions and rights, sectors mostly prone to trafficking in human beings for the purpose of labour exploitation (construction, textile, agriculture…), gaps in the legal frameworks and statistics were addressed by Ms Sonja Vukanović, President of the Independent road union, and Mario Reljanović, research associate at the Institute for Comparative Law in Belgrade and President of the Centre for Decent Work.
Recommendations for further improvements in this area emerged from the constructive discussions and experience shared between the participants and stakeholders.
The event was attended by 44 people and live-streaming on Facebook was followed by more than 300 people. The campaign is supported by the joint programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022".
