Key stakeholders discuss gender equality in the judicial system of Montenegro

The UNDP Gender Team in Montenegro, in cooperation with the Council of Europe Programme Office in Podgorica, through the action Strengthening accountability of the judicial system and enhancing protection of victims' rights in Montenegro, has conducted a comprehensive research on gender equality and representation within the judicial system of Montenegro.

The research resulted in a report that was presented and discussed with key institutional stakeholders. The discussions focused on the report’s main findings and recommendations aimed at advancing gender equality, strengthening institutional mechanisms to prevent discrimination against women, and improving the response to gender-based violence.

This consultative process also contributed to strengthening institutional ownership of the findings and identifying concrete next steps for implementing the recommendations. The participation of the Supreme State Prosecutor, a judge of the Supreme Court as well as the Court’ Secretary and advisor for gender issues, as well as senior representatives of the Ministry of Justice further enriched the dialogue and reinforced the relevance of the process.

Following these discussions, the report was finalised and disseminated to relevant stakeholders. Its findings and recommendations are expected to support ongoing policy and institutional reforms and contribute to advancing gender equality within the judicial system in Montenegro.
