Gender plays an important role in young people's lives, and their participation in political, social and economic life, due to gender roles and stereotypes. Perceptions of gender positions and identities influence how young people relate to themselves and to others. This section of the Perspectives on youth explores contemporary understandings of gender, acknowledging the need for greater gender equality between the sexes, but also opening up the space for a broader discussion of gender identities.
