The first round of the programme for trainers on “Detention in the Context of Migration” dedicated to lawyers from different bar associations across Türkiye was concluded in Ankara, in cooperation with the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (UTBA). The three-day training, attended by 22 lawyers, aimed to increase the knowledge of the participants on the principle of non-refoulement, the right to liberty and security including lawfulness of detention, alternatives to immigration detention, and protection of persons in a vulnerable situation, in line with the international and European human rights standards.
These trainings are contributing in the process of strengthening the knowledge and capacities of legal professionals in the field, in order to improve the quality of support provided to persons in the context of asylum and migration, and equip them with the necessary skills to conduct in-house trainings in their workplace.
The participants valued the importance of such capacity building activities and extended their appreciation for the support provided in the framework of the action “Strengthening the human rights protection in the context of migration in Türkiye” which aims to enhance detention conditions and ensuring that appropriate procedural safeguards are in place in line with European and international standards in the context of migration.
This action is implemented within the framework of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
