Open media literacy days in Serbia: Regulatory Authority organises trainings on media literacy for preschool educators

With the support of the European Union and the Council of Europe, the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media in Serbia (REM) conducted an outreach event on promoting media literacy, providing 90 pre-school educators with enhanced knowledge, recommendations and tools to promote media literacy, within “Open media literacy days” campaign.

This event is the result of the effort made by REM to develop its capacities to equip preschool educators with the tools needed to teach safe navigation in the digital landscape. A pivotal catalyst for pre-school age children as a focus was REM’s-commissioned survey in 2022, which has unveiled a concerning reality: 69.7% of surveyed preschool educators expressed concern regarding the effects of social networks on children, categorising this influence as either "harmful" or "very harmful."

The preschool educators articulated a resounding call for the continued expansion of media literacy outreach initiatives. They expressed keen interest in utilising the educational tools provided and advocated for a more profound collaboration with REM in the future, recognising the intrinsic value of synergy in advancing the field. The consensus among preschool educators is that fostering parental awareness of digital environments assumes pivotal importance in the holistic education of children.

The action “Protecting freedom of expression and of the media (PRO-FREX) in Serbia” is part of the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
