Serbian labour inspectors learned on human trafficking for labour exploitation

15 labour inspectors from eight Serbian cities participated in the online workshop on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings for the purpose of labour exploitation from 18 to 20 November 2020. Trough the multidisciplinary, comprehensive and very participative approach, the participants learned on prevention of human trafficking for labour exploitation, indicators for recognition and detection of human trafficking, protection of potential victims and on inspectors’ role in prevention, detection and investigation of cases.

“After the training, we are capable to recognise signs of trafficking and labour exploitation and we know whom to contact. Before the training, we did not know what trafficking in human beings is, neither which are the risk sectors that we need to follow closely”, said Dusica Stosic, labour inspector from Vranje.

The labour inspectors were joined by the National Anti-trafficking Co-ordinator, Mitar Djuraskovic, and representatives of the Centre for Human Trafficking Victims’ Protection and civil society organisations, who informed on strategic and operative anti-trafficking framework, national referral mechanism, scope of work of key anti-trafficking actors and their co-operation, available assistance for potential victims and victims of trafficking in human beings, as well as on concrete cases in Serbia. Experience from Belgium on the role of labour inspectors in fighting against labour exploitation was presented.

The workshop also included presentations of results from the ongoing awareness raising campaigns on preventing human trafficking for labour exploitation, conducted by civil society organisations Atina and Astra, with the financial support of the action. Both CSOs produced information materials, conducted meetings and attended high schools and construction sites in five cities in Serbia.

So far approximately 88% of the labour inspectors in Serbia have increased their skills through similar workshops since the phase I of the action (out of total number of 240 labour inspectors).

The action “Preventing and combating trafficking in human beings in Serbia” is implemented under the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme „Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019 – 2022”.
