An “International conference on women’s access to justice in Türkiye” will take place at the Av. Özdemir Özok Convention and Cultural Centre of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations in Ankara (Oğuzlar Mahallesi Barış Manço Caddesi Av. Özdemir Özok Sokak No:8 06520 Balgat/Çankaya) from 09:30 on Monday 27 November 2023.
The conference will bring representatives of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and the Presidents of local bar associations together with representatives of the Council of Europe, embassies, public institutions and civil society organisations working on women’s access to justice.
Opening remarks will be delivered by:
- William MASSOLIN, Head of Office, Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara
- Caterina BOLOGNESE, Head of the Gender Equality Division, Council of Europe
- H.E. Nikolaus MEYER-LANDRUT, Ambassador, Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye
- Atty. R. Erinç SAĞKAN, President of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations
The conference aims to provide a platform for key stakeholders to strengthen their co-operation in support of women’s access to justice in Türkiye. It will address international principles behind gender-responsive judicial systems, the main barriers and challenges to women’s access to justice in Türkiye and the monitoring role of legal professionals and civil society organisations.
The conference will also include a signing ceremony to launch a grant scheme for funding legal aid services for women in eight pilot provinces (Adıyaman, Malatya, Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Sinop, Bilecik, Bursa, Tunceli).
The opening remarks and the signing ceremony will be open to the media (09:00 – 10:45). Interpretation in English/Turkish will be provided.
This event is part of the European Union and Council of Europe’s joint action on “Fostering women's access to justice in Türkiye”, implemented as part of the joint programme entitled "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
