First group of pilot schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina prepared to become resource centers for democratic culture

The third and final activity for teachers from seven pilot schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), organised within the joint European Union/Council of Europe action “Quality education for all”, took place in Bijeljina from 23 to 25 April. Forty primary and secondary teachers participated in the sessions which focused on the understanding and development of democratic values in the school environment.

Between October 2023 and April 2024, three capacity building sessions have been organised with the aim of strengthening teachers’ capacities and further supporting pilot schools to develop into resource centres for democratic culture. Teachers across BiH have been equipped with methodological knowledge, practical tools and concrete examples on how to successfully implement the Reference Framework of the Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) in their classrooms.

In the coming period the action will provide further support to teachers who are currently undergoing a mentorship programme delivered in co-operation with local civil society organisations “Step by Step” and “Promente social research”. A selected number of teachers who complete the programme will be recognised as experts on the RFCDC and will become part of the local pool of trainers ready to provide peer-to-peer learning and mentoring. By building and improving local capacities and competences for democratic culture in school communities, the action continues to promote quality education for all.

The action “Quality education for all” is part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
