Partner Cities and Municipalities mark the International Roma Day in Serbia

Marking April 8 as International Roma Day aims to highlight the self-determination of Roma as well as the fact that Roma around the world are still at a considerable disadvantage compared to the majority population in almost all areas of social life, being subject to discrimination, antigypsyism and deeply rooted social exclusion.

The International Roma Day was traditionally celebrated in all ROMACTED partner cities and municipalities in Serbia. In Aleksinac, in the Assembly Hall, organised by the Municipality of Aleksinac, a formal reception was held for the members of the Roma community and organisations, institutions and teams dealing with improving the living conditions of Roma. In Apatin, in co-operation with the Association "Golden Sun", a documentary film entitled "Who are the Roma? Let's better understand each other" was screened at the Cultural Centre. The event was organised under the auspices of the Municipality of Apatin, and the film, produced by "Rominfomedia" speaks about the historical origin of Roma and their language and culture.

In the Municipality of Kostolac, a cultural and artistic event was organised at the Cultural Centre. In Kragujevac, the International Roma Day was marked with a ceremonial academy in the City Assembly, while in Krusevac, the cultural centre organised the “Roma Music, Poetry and Actors Evening”.

Many Roma gathered in the Roma settlement Rasadnik in Pirot to celebrate this day together, where they enjoyed music and a festive lunch. In the cultural centre in Prokuplje, a round table was organised on improving the conditions for education of Roma community.

In City of Subotica, the Mayor met with the representatives of the Roma community in the City Hall. On the same occasion, in Elementary School "Matko Vukovic" a rich cultural and artistic programme was delivered and was also an opportunity for the pupils of this school to bring the culture, customs, language and history closer to their peers, parents and guests.

In Zajecar, a street action was organised in the form of distribution of flyers and conversations with citizens on the topic of the rights of Roma men and women, while in the City Municipality of Zvezdara a ceremonial forum took place in the large Hall of the Municipality with the aim of promoting Roma culture and tradition, the most common problems in the community and the importance of tolerance. Documentary film "Girls, Not Brides" produced by the NGO "Children's Center Little Prince" was screen. The Municipality of Zvezdara also organised a public class for students of the third grade of the Elementary School "Despot Stefan Lazarević", where the goal was to introduce students to the culture and tradition of Roma.

On the occasion of this day, the Romani flag was placed on the municipal building in Apatin, Kragujevac, Lebane, Zvezdara, Zajecar, Subotica and Vrnjacka Banja.
