Tuzla Canton Marks a Historic Milestone by Introducing Roma Language in School Curriculum

In a significant stride towards promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity, Tuzla Canton, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has broken new ground by introducing the Romani language into its school curriculum. This pioneering initiative, which is fully supported by the Ministry of Education as well as the city of Tuzla, represents a significant step towards recognising and preserving the rich heritage of the Roma community.

City of Tuzla has been actively involved in the ROMACTED II Programme and highlighted the importance of Roma culture and language, through nominating Roma Cultural Centre as a sub-grantee through the ROMACTED Programme.

The Roma Cultural Centre, in synergy with ROMACTED II support organisation EuroRom, organised an event in the City Hall on the occasion of the 5th of November: the World Day of Romani Language. The event brought together, linguists from the neighbouring countries, representatives of the Ministry of Education, Tuzla city officials, Roma representatives and international community, who had an opportunity to hear about rich experiences for the preservation of the cultural identity of Roma focusing on Romani language. Moreover, a textbook "ANGLUNO RROMANO LIL – ROMA BEGINNER" was presented by its author Ms Hedina Tahirovic Sijercic which will be used in all primary schools in Tuzla Canton.

The inclusion of the Romani language in the school curriculum is a historic milestone for Tuzla Canton as the language will be formally taught in local schools. The project aims to strengthen cultural ties, foster understanding, and provide equal educational opportunities for all residents. Romani language, tradition and culture will be studied in all primary schools in Tuzla canton, starting from next year. So far, six hundred elementary school students have expressed interest into the topics.

This decision is a great example of how to create better awareness and positive representations of Roma communities and culture to the general public and therefore combat antigypsyism and discrimination and support real and effective equality which is one of the three priority areas of the Strategic Action Plan for Roma and Traveller Inclusion (2020-2025) of the Council of Europe.
