ROMACTED Programme introduced the concept of antigypsyism to prosecutors and police representatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina

As a significant step towards fostering inclusivity and combating discrimination, a recent event brought together 38 prosecutors and police officers for specialised training on domestic and European legal standards on the protection from hate speech.  As a part of joint efforts to tackle all aspects of hate speech, the concept of antigypsyism and hate speech was introduced through the synergy with the Action on “Protection of freedom of expression and the media in Bosnia and Herzegovina – PROFREX” and ROMACTED Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The initiative aimed at equipping the law enforcement professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to address these issues effectively in regard to the Roma citizens.

Antigypsyism and hate speech remain a pervasive issues that contribute to the marginalization of vulnerable communities. The training session delved into the dynamics of hate speech, exploring its impact on targeted groups and the broader social fabric. The participants were trained on identifying and addressing hate speech effectively, emphasizing the role of law enforcement in promoting tolerance and dismantling harmful narratives. The prosecutors and police officers were encouraged to continue learning about the diverse cultures within Roma communities, challenging their own biases, and staying updated on best practices for addressing antigypsyism and hate speech.

This training event for prosecutors and police officers on antigypsyism and hate speech marks a positive step towards creating a more inclusive and tolerant society in Bosnia and Herzegovina. By equipping law enforcement with the knowledge and tools to recognize, address, and prevent discrimination, this initiative contributes to building a justice system that upholds the rights of all citizens. As we move forward, a continued collaboration and education will be essential in the ongoing fight against antigypsyism and hate speech, fostering a society where diversity is celebrated and protected.

This activity is in line with the Council of Europe`s Strategic Action Plan for Roma and Traveller Inclusion (2020 – 2025), and more precisely the strategic objective on combatting antigypsyism and discrimination and support real and effective equality.
