How “Pinocchio” is helping children in North Macedonia to prevent trafficking

Fairy tales have always been considered powerful tools for teaching young children about life: how to recognise emotions, learn right from wrong and understand the consequences of their actions. With the support of the EU and Council of Europe action “Strengthening anti-trafficking action in North Macedonia” the classical tale of “Pinocchio” was adapted as an educational resource tool to teach children how to prevent child trafficking in North Macedonia. The scenarios developed in co-operation with the National Anti-trafficking Commission and the Ministry of Education, the Bureau for Development of Education, uses the rich symbolism of the tale of  “Pinocchio” to teach pupils about trust-building and how to identify manipulations, lies, false promises and exploitation. An emphasis is placed on fostering soft skills in pupils, such as effective communication, critical thinking, teamwork, creativity and responsible behaviours. The goal is to prepare children to recognise harmful behaviours and protect themselves and others from child trafficking and other abuses.

The methodology includes adjusted scenarios depending on the age and the level of understanding of the pupils from 1st to 6th grade. They set out motivation techniques, help with the pupil’s skills development and contain recommendations for additional resources. The teachers are encouraged to create an enabling learning environment that encourages curiosity, participation, well-being and mutual respect of the pupils.
