How can local institutions and civil society better prevent discrimination and ensure that people know where to turn when their rights are violated? This was the focus of a workshop in Tetovo on 29 October which brought together more than 30 educators, CSOs and the local self-government to explore practical protection mechanisms and ways to promote equality at community level.
Titled "Closer to the People: Protection Against Discrimination and Advancing Human Rights," the workshop’s opening featured a powerful message from Yusuf Abduli, President of the Council of Municipality of Tetovo, who emphasised the importance of working together to safeguard human rights and promote equality within the community.
Organised in partnership with the Commission for Prevention and Protection against Discrimination and the Ombudsperson, participants gained valuable knowledge and tools to identify and address discrimination more effectively. The event highlighted practical approaches and inspired dialogue, empowering Tetovo’s community leaders to lead the fight against intolerance. Tetovo’s commitment to advancing human rights demonstrates that lasting change starts with local action and engaged leadership.
This initiative was supported by the Action Combating Hatred and Intolerance in North Macedonia, which is part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
