Montenegro judges and media unite to improve court transparency

In a groundbreaking initiative, judges and media professionals in Montenegro met in Podgorica for the first time to strengthen collaboration on the dissemination of information from court proceedings.

During the two-day event, participants delved into pressing issues, including the Council of Europe’s Recommendation Rec(2003)13 on providing information through the media in criminal proceedings.

Judges, journalists, and editors engaged in a dynamic discussion on improving mutual understanding, with a special session led by the Head of Public Relations at the Supreme Court highlighting the main challenges in media-judiciary communication.

The meeting also marked a key step in implementing Montenegro's new Communication Strategy for Courts and the Judicial Council, which outlines clear principles for communication between the judiciary and the media.

This  activity was organised within the action “Protecting freedom of expression and of the media in Montenegro PROFREX-M"  implemented by the Division for Co-operation on Freedom of Expression of the Council of Europe, and part of the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
