Authorities strengthen data use to fight against money laundering and terrorism financing

Authorities in Türkiye are stepping up efforts to use data more effectively in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, with a focus on improving investigations, prosecutions and asset recovery.

At a workshop held in Antalya, representatives from key national institutions, including the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, Financial Crimes Investigation Board, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Trade and law enforcement agencies worked on practical ways to strengthen data collection, sharing and analysis across institutions.

The event focused on the strategic importance of data in supporting authorities understand financial crime patterns and improving operational outcomes. The Council of Europe’s international experts delivered presentations on types and sources of data, as well as practical approaches to improving data quality, interoperability and the use of digital tools.

Discussions also addressed common challenges, such as difficulties in accessing data, inconsistencies between systems and the need for stronger coordination across institutions.

Specific sessions explored challenges related to asset recovery in more detail, including asset valuation and tracking asset-related data throughout the lifecycle of cases, as well as the role of financial intelligence units in supporting confiscation processes.

Participants enhanced their knowledge of good practices, exchanged experiences and identified ways to strengthen data collection and use in their respective systems.

This activity was organised within the framework of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye" and its “Action against money laundering in Türkiye”.
