Peer-to-peer training on collecting and analysing financial intelligence data took place in Podgorica, Montenegro on 18-20 October 2022.

During the three-day training, the experts of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) Montenegro had the opportunity to get acquainted with the practices of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) Malta with regard to the processing of suspicious transaction reports, operational in-depth analysis, international co-operation and monitoring the effectiveness of the unit through appropriate statistical information. The training provided a platform to share experiences related to the Fifth Round of MONEYVAL evaluations with particular emphasis on the lessons learned and good practices emerging from the previous grey-listing of Malta by FATF.

On the other hand, the Montenegrin FIU presented their good practices, with an emphasis on the Case Management System developed within the Action against economic crime in Montenegro which enables electronic collection and processing of data and development of financial intelligence.

Taking into account the pertinent money laundering/financing terrorism risks that Montenegro faces in the sector of games of chance and virtual currencies, and the experience of Malta, practical cases in this area were discussed in detail and views were exchanged on the challenges arising in the daily work of both FIUs.

This event was organised within the framework of the Action against economic crime in Montenegro, which is a part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019 – 2022”.
