Students from Montenegro visit the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights

Human rights education encourages people to uphold their own rights and effectively protect those of others. For this reason the joint European Union and Council of Europe action “Improved procedural safeguards in judicial proceedings in Montenegro” pays particular attention to initiating law students to human rights law and practical application of the European Convention on Human Rights (the Convention).

25 students involved in legal clinics established under the action, participated in a study visit to the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) on 18-19 October 2022. Law students had a unique opportunity to attend the Grand Chamber hearing of Pagerie v. France (no. 8675/15), followed by the individual thematic presentations on recent judgements in respect of Montenegro, HELP online courses, implementation of the Istanbul Convention at the national level and campaigns organised by the European Youth Centre.

The study visit allowed the participants to get a better understanding of the work of European human rights institutions and encouraged them to take responsibility for respecting and promoting human rights when they return home.

The activity is being implemented within the action "Improved procedural safeguards in judicial proceedings in Montenegro", which is a part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
