European Union and Council of Europe organise thematic discussion: “Upholding Journalistic Integrity: Safeguarding Journalists and Media Actors in North Macedonia”

A thematic discussion on "Upholding Journalistic Integrity: Safeguarding Journalists and Media Actors in North Macedonia," will be organised on 17 April 2024 in Hotel Aleksandar Palace, in the framework of the European Union and the Council of Europe joint action “Protecting freedom of expression and of the media in North Macedonia” PRO-FREX.

The event will bring together key stakeholders from the media industry, representatives from relevant public institutions, civil society organisations, and international partners to engage in a constructive dialogue and explore solutions to address increasing ‘Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation’ (SLAPPs) in North Macedonia.

The thematic discussion will be opened by:

  • Oleg Soldatov, Head of Council of Europe Programme Office in Skopje
  • Alina Tatarenko, Head of Division on Co-operation and Capacity Building on Freedom of Expression
  • Dragan Sekulovski, Executive Director of the Association of Journalists of Macedonia

 

The event will begin at 10.30 a.m. and is open to the media. Press credentials will be required for access to certain sessions.

Horizontal Facility III

The joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye” (Horizontal Facility III) is a co-operation initiative, running from 2023 until 2026.

The programme covers actions in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Türkiye. It enables the Beneficiaries to meet their reform agendas in the fields of human rights, rule of law and democracy and to comply with European standards, which is also a priority for the EU enlargement process.

The third phase of the programme is worth €41 million (85% funded by the European Union, 15% by the Council of Europe).
