Litigating for change: Training on legal strategies to promote women’s rights protection in Türkiye

As many as 41 lawyers from bar associations and civil society organisations (29 women, 12 men), joined forces in a specialised training to enhance their skills in strategic litigation. Their joint efforts aim to drive progress on women's rights and contribute to gender equality in Türkiye.

Held in one of the provinces most severely impacted by the devastating earthquakes of February 2023, the training also focused on addressing the importance of responding to the unique needs of women affected by the earthquake. Participants explored how strategic litigation can be a meaningful instrument to secure women’s rights, especially in the context of accessing justice, public services, and protection mechanisms during post-disaster recovery.

The training equipped participants with essential tools to identify and pursue cases that have the potential to set legal precedents, influence societal attitudes, and foster legal reform. Interactive sessions, including practical exercises with amicus curiae briefs, allowed participants to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in real-life scenarios.

The action “Fostering women's access to justice in Türkiye” is part of the European Union and Council of Europe’s joint programme "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye“. It contributes to enhancing accessibility and quality of legal aid services for women and supporting key stakeholders, including civil society, as well as increasing legal awareness and literacy among women in Türkiye.
