International Volunteering Day in Montenegro

On 5 December, the Horizontal Facility Action “Fostering a democratic school culture” supported the celebration of “International Volunteering Day” in two high schools from Podgorica and Tuzi, which are part of the network of pilot schools created for the purpose of the project. The events triggered a number of new students taking membership of the volunteering clubs from both schools.

These clubs aim at creating civic activism opportunities for students in the local community, such as support activities for the elderly, disadvantaged families, kids, etc. For the occasion, a ceremony to hand over the membership cards was organised. Around 100 volunteers from the Podgorica high school “Slobodan Skerovic” delivered a performance “Sharing is giving” and danced to the “Volunteering hymn”. Around 30 volunteers from the high school “25. maj” from Tuzi walked to the city centre where a flash mob took place with the students dancing to the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams and displaying the flag with the Volunteering Club's slogan on it "Once a volunteer, always a volunteer”.

The primary purpose of celebrating the day is to further engage the schools in civic initiatives, thus educating its pupils for more active citizenship. The hope is that this it will motivate students to participate in future actions as well as to identify the true meaning of volunteerism, spreading the spirit and culture of democracy in schools.
