The 3rd Steering Committee Meeting of the Horizontal Facility Action “Enhancing the protection of human rights of prisoners in Albania” was held in Tirana on 31 January 2018 to evaluate the achieved progress and to approve the new plan of activities. The meeting highlighted the support provided to the prison administration to improve the application of professional and integrity criteria for the recruitment of prison staff and to implement higher prison management standards, based on advanced initial and in-service training curricula and the training of the staff, including prison health care staff. The meeting also encouraged synergies with civil society and other donor initiatives in the prison field.
The steering committee meeting was attended by the Head of Operations, the Program Manager for Democracy and Human Rights and the Human Rights Officer from the European Union Delegation in Tirana, the General Director of the Prison Administration, representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, National Preventive Mechanism, the Swedish Embassy and NGOs.
The Action is part of the ‘Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey’ co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
