Montenegrin law students visit the Council of Europe

Human rights education encourages people to uphold their own rights and effectively protect those of others. For this reason human rights education should be introduced as early as possible as an integral part of legal teaching cycle.

The Project “Fighting Ill-treatment and impunity and enhancing the application of the European Court of Human Rights case-law on national level” pays particular attention to initiating law students to human rights law and practical application of the European Convention on Human Rights (the Convention).

Upon successful completion of the legal clinic on Article 3 of the Convention, organised under the Project, 16 students participated in a study visit to the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) on 25-26 September 2018.

The two-day study visit included individual thematic presentations on Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals online courses , work of the Committee against Prevention of Torture and inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment (CPT), recent case law of the Court on Article 3 of the Convention. Law students had a unique opportunity to attend the Grand Chamber hearing of N.D. and N.T. v. Spain (no. 8675/15), where they witnessed the first third-party intervention of the current Commissioner for Human Rights.

The study visit allowed the participants to get a better understanding of the work of European human rights institutions and encouraged them to take responsibility for respecting and promoting human rights when they return home.

The Project “Fighting ill-treatment and impunity and enhancing the application of the European Court of Human Rights case-law on national level” is funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans, and implemented by the Council of Europe.
