European standards on elections shared with key actors

As the parliamentary elections are approaching, the issue of ensuring freedom of expression, particularly freedom of political debate, is of ultimate importance considering the necessity that opinions and information of all kinds are permitted to circulate freely during the election period.

To encourage improvements in this field, the European Union and Council of Europe joint action on “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media (JUFREX)” translated and published into local languages the factsheet covering elections issued by the Council of Europe’s Platform for the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists. These adapted informational materials aim to provide information about the European standards for the media actors, policy and decision makers and all other interested parties.

This thematic factsheet highlights the European Court of Human Rights’ relevant case-law and the Council of Europe’s other instruments aiming to protect the freedom of expression.

The factsheet in EnglishAlbanian and in Serbian.

The Action “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media” is part of the “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey II”, a co-operation initiative co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe, which aims at assisting Beneficiaries in the Western Balkans region and Turkey to comply with the Council of Europe standards and European Union acquis in the framework of the enlargement process, where relevant.
