Education for human rights and democratic citzenship in secondary schools in Ukraine

Introducing the basic principles and tools of Education for Human Rights and Democratic Cizitenship into school governance helps teachers and school heads to take responsibility together, to allow students to perceive school as the first institution in their lives that organises teaching, learning and school life as a whole in the spirit of democracy and human rights. A pilot seminar for teachers and school principals "Education for Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship" took place on December 4-5th December in Lviv, Ukraine.

The main feature of Education for Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship is that it involves active learning and students’ participation in decision-making processes. Its uniqueness lies in the development and establishment of democratic values in secondary education in Ukraine, the system of democratic self-governance, and the establishment of democratic principles in the education system as a whole.

45 teachers and school heads, representatives from 20 schools of Lviv and the Lviv region formed school teams at a 2-day training workshop to get acquainted with the educational materials of the Council of Europe on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education, with the aim of developing democratic governance in their schools.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Council of Europe is beginning a series of training workshops for schools on education for democratic citizenship and human rights. The workshop for the piloting schools was held within the framework of the EU/CoE Joint Programme “Promoting Human Rights Education and Democratic Citizenship in Eastern Partnership countries”.
