A group of newly recruited prison staff improved their competencies for performing daily tasks in dealing with prison population in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of a training commissioned by the local ministries of justice. Daily prison processes such as searching, escorting and organising purposeful activities for prisoners comprise the core and advanced competencies framework that prison staff must evidence daily when providing humane yet rule of law abiding treatment of prisoners.
Another integral part of the treatment aligned with principles of dynamic security is efficient communication. This often implict albeit crucial competence is particularly important for the performance of prison staff. As one of the most prominent modules of the training framework developed under the past Council of Europe projects implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it complements the institutional training for prison staff designed by the Ministries of Justice.
The new prison recruits appreciate and benefit from both training frameworks, qualifying this opportunity to develop professsionally as ''an invaluable complement to the theoretical knowledge we are receiving 6 months into our appointment. These training sessions enable us to learn how to put legal provisions into practice.''
This 3-day training session was held on 7-9 November 2017 in Bijeljina as a part of the Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey that is implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina as ''Enhancing human rights protection for detained and sentenced persons'' Action. One more session is planned in late November.
