On 21 October 2018 the European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe (CoE) in cooperation with the Legal Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia organised a workshop on “Effective parliamentary oversight on execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) by the government”. The workshop brought together the representatives of the parliamentary judiciary, Public Defender’s Office and civil society organisations to discuss existing parliamentary structures for assessing human rights compliance, reporting mechanisms that systematize the dialogue between the executive and parliament.

The principles underpinning the role of national parliaments in the verification of Convention standards and implementation of ECtHR judgments were also discussed. Furthermore, participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas on importance of establishing and maintaining regular dialogue between the parliament and national human rights institutions, including well established non-governmental organisations in order to provide the parliament with independent advice on the state of execution of the ECtHR judgments by the government.

The event was organised in the framework of the European Union – Council of Europe joint project “Strengthening the Application of the European Convention on Human Rights in Georgia”, within the EU-CoE Partnership for Good Governance.
