Support to the Moldovan Bar Association: a revised Code of Ethics

On 14-15 December, the "Support to the Moldovan Bar Association" component of the PCF Project on “Strengthening the efficiency of justice and support to lawyers’ profession in the Republic of Moldova” organized in cooperation with the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative ABA ROLI Moldova a workshop on Professional Lawyers Ethics.

Members of the Council of the Moldovan Bar Association, the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission and the Licensing Commissions as well as representatives of the Young Lawyers Association and Women Lawyers Association benefited from a high level expertise provided by Mrs Lucy DUPONG, President of the CCBE Ethics Commission (2009-2014), Mr. Irakli Kordzakhia, chair of the Georgian Bar Association Disciplinary Body (2010-2011), accredited lecturer in professional ethics and Mr Vahe Grigoryan, project consultant and Council of Europe expert.

The second day of the workshop was devoted to the Working Group meeting revising the current Code of Ethics adopted in 2002. According to the Code of Ethics, among other important provisions, professional deontology rules are intended to ensure the performance of the lawyer’s mission for the proper administration of justice and promotion and protection of human rights.

As a result of the workshop, the revised version of the Code of Ethics is ready to be submitted for consultations within the profession and adoption at the next Lawyers General Assembly meeting.

The component on the "Support to the Moldovan Bar Association" of the "Strengthening the efficiency of justice and support to lawyers' profession in the Republic of Moldova" project is funded by the Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus. The Council of Europe and European Union are working in partnership with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus to help them meet Council of Europe benchmarks in human rights, democracy and the rule of law and improve the lives of citizens.
