Strengthening independence of justice in Georgia

On 2 June 2015, the launch of the Council of Europe and European Union joint project “Support to the Georgian Bar Association” took place in Tbilisi.

The project objectives are :

  • increased compliance of national legislations and regulations concerning the mandate and functioning of the Georgian Bar Association (GBA) with European standards and Council of Europe recommendations;
  • strengthened capacity of the GBA management and staff to apply management techniques in carrying out their tasks efficiently;
  • increased compliance of the Code of Professional Ethics for Lawyers practicing in Georgia in line with European standards and best practices;
  • increased legal skills of lawyers through the development of curricula for continuous training courses and the use of the online teaching platform;
  • modernised entrance examination for law students.

The project will last for 18-months and the overall budget amounts to € 400.000: 90% funded by the European Union and 10% funded by the Council of Europe through the Programmatic Cooperation Framework for Eastern Partnership countries. The project is implemented by the Council of Europe.
