The European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe (CoE) in co-operation with the High School of Justice officially launched the online Human Rights for Legal Professionals (HELP) course on Reasoning of Criminal Judgments Justice on 23 October in Tbilisi, Georgia.

This free online course has been designed to address the needs of judges, specifically the requirement to reference the judgments and case-law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in their National Courts.

The course is developed in an interactive way; it has 7 different modules including Right to Fair Trial under article 6, reasoning of criminal judgments in the context of articles 2, 3, 5, 8, 10. Apart from the adaptation of the online course to the Georgian legal context, the EU and the CoE support the involvement of two national tutors, who will supervise the distance learning of 20 judge assistants, whose terms of references include preparation of draft judgments. The activity aims at strengthening application of the ECHR standards by the national courts and contributing to the better quality of justice.

The event was organised in the framework of the European Union and Council of Europe joint project “Strengthening the Application of the European Convention on Human Rights in Georgia”, within the EU-CoE Partnership for Good Governance.
