Launch of project to strengthen health care in prisons in Armenia

On 2 June 2015,  the Council of Europe and European Union joint project on “Strengthening Health Care and Human Rights Protection in Prisons in Armenia”was officially launched in Yerevan, in partnership with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia.

The project will last 24-months and will be completed by 28 February 2017. Its objectives are to strengthen human rights in prisons in Armenia through the better provision of healthcare, including mental health care. This will be achieved through the improvement of the legal and institutional framework of healthcare in prisons, prison staff training and the improvement of the conditions of healthcare units in prisons, with a special focus on those prisons which were considered as problematic in the latest reports of the Council of Europe's European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Key speakers at the launch event included Mr Hovhannes Manukyan, Minister of Justice of Republic of Armenia; Ms Natalia Voutova, Head of Council of Europe Office in Yerevan; Mr Hoa-Binh Adjemian, Head of Cooperation Section of Delegation of European Union to Armenia.
