Human rights and the internet in Azerbaijan

Within the framework of the joint EU/CoE project “Freedom of Expression and Media Freedom in Azerbaijan” a conference on Internet and Human Rights took place on 1 March 2016 in Baku. The conference was organised in close cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Internet Forum. The main aim of the conference was to raise awareness about Council of Europe standards on Human Rights protection on the Internet, to promote the internet infrastructure and online media, and to open the floor for discussions. Local and international experts made presentations on CoE standards as well as domestic legislation and practice in the related field. About 70 representatives of state authorities (the Presidential Administration, Ministry of Communications and High Technologies, Milli Majlis, Ombudsman’s Office, state committees and agencies), Internet service providers, academia, media professionals and representatives of civil society attended the conference.
