Kyrgyzstan – International conference on “Judicial independence in the context of constitutional reforms

The Venice Commission and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan organised on 16 September 2022 an international conference entitled “Judicial independence in the context of constitutional reforms”. The event benefitted from the support of the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme 2020-2023.

More than 100 high-level representatives from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan attended the conference. Venice Commission experts from Georgia, North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, and the Republic of Korea presented Venice Commission standards in the field of judicial independence and shared their national experience.

Judges from the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan and ordinary courts, representatives of the Constitutional Court of Kyrgyzstan as well as representatives of various international organisations and donors present in the country participated also in the event.

Participants learned about judicial independence safeguards in the constitutional landscape, the relation between the judiciary and the other branches of state power, as well the various mechanisms for ensuring the independence of justice.

The Central Asia Rule of Law Programme 2020-2023 is co-funded by the Council of Europe and the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe.
