A seminar on сurrent problems in criminal proceedings was held in Uzbekistan

A seminar “Current problems in criminal proceedings: Council of Europe standards and the case law of the European court of human rights” took place on 30 March 2022 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The seminar which aimed at raising knowledge on criminal justice was held for fifty judges of the Supreme School of judges under the Supreme Judicial Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

“Education for judges is one of the priorities of the School of judges” reiterated the Deputy chair of the Judicial Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr Alisher Dzalilov, at the opening of the event. The seminar was particularly focused on judicial control over the preliminary investigation and operational-search activities and protection of victims of crimes, compensation rights. This was, inter alia, presented in light of the European standards and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights as well as referring to the national legal system of Uzbekistan.

The representatives of the School of judges of Uzbekistan have also stated that the seminar was of paramount importance for judges and such raising awareness activities will be supported and strengthened further. The seminar served as a platform for discussion and sharing of experience on national and international legal standards. A vast majority of participants have declared that the thematic topics cover their actual needs and are very timely.

This seminar was organised in the framework of the action "HELP in Central Asia" within the Central Asia Rule of Law Programme 2020-2023 which is a joint initiative, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe. HELP in Central Asia aims at improving knowledge and skills of justice professionals in the area of human rights and ensuring the application of human rights principles in their daily work in five countries of Central Asia including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
