As part of the South Programme V, data protection experts and institutional representatives from Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, and Morocco are taking part in expert exchanges on the Council of Europe’s digital agenda, focusing on advancements on data protection and artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative seeks to strengthen regional cooperation and to develop strategies to address the policies applicable to the development of AI and data-driven technologies in the Southern Mediterranean.
The Council of Europe acknowledge the positive impact and opportunities created by new and emerging digital technologies while recognizing the need to mitigate risks of negative consequences on human rights, democracy and the rule of law arising from the use of those technologies. It also promotes international cooperation and principles-based regulation, strong of its Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law and the modernized Convention for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data; both instruments open for accession by all countries in the world.
During the visit, participants will engage in exchanges with key Council of Europe bodies and the Secretariat of various Council of Europe conventions; including inter alia, the Secretariat of Convention 108/108+, Secretariat of the Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI) the Venice Commission, and they will visit the European Court of Human Rights.
