Launching event of the EU/CoE South Programme IV: « Regional Support to Reinforce Human Rights, Rule of Law and Democracy in the Southern Mediterranean” (2020-2022)

A high-level online live event will be held on 23 November 2020 in the framework of the partnership of the European Union and the Council of Europe in the Southern Mediterranean, the “South Programme IV” aiming to provide a regional support to reinforce human rights, rule of law and democracy in this region.

This event will mark the official launching of the fourth phase of the programme and will bring together representatives of the Council of Europe, the European Union as well as representatives of national and international institutions and civil society organisations of the Southern Mediterranean.

The event will start at 10:00 CET with welcoming addresses by Verena Taylor, Director of the Office of the Directorate General of Programmes (Council of Europe) and by Henrike Trautmann, Acting Director, Southern Neighbourhood, Turkey, Migration/Refugees and Security issues (DG NEAR, European Union).

It aims to take stock of the co-operation with Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Palestine* to promote human rights, rule of law and democratic governance in accordance with European and international standards, established during the previous phases of the programme and present joint objectives for the upcoming phase.

This event will also be featuring two virtual live panels with an interactive format:

  • First live panel at 11:00 CET, on “How to step-up regional dialogue in the Southern Mediterranean to fight against economic-crime?”
  • Second panel at 14:00 CET, on “How to step-up regional dialogue in the Southern Mediterranean to combat violence against women and girls?”

Participants will be able to share their ideas and comments on the new phase of the South Programme with a suggestion box available on the webpage and be disseminated on social media.
