How can competences for democratic culture be integrated in the national system of secondary education? This was the specific focus of a training seminar on “Competences for Democratic Culture in the System of Secondary Education in the Republic of Moldova” that took place in Chisinau on 15-18 October.

35 curricula developers from the national educational institutions participated in this four-day training seminar. The aim of the seminar was to support the national education system in the Republic of Moldova to develop competency-based educational curricula.

Mr Valentin Crudu, Director of the Pre-university Department of Education and Ms Lilia Pogolşa, Deputy Minister of Culture, Education and Research addressed the participants with words of support for the development of the new curricula based on competences for democratic culture.

Ms Eva Gutjahr, Deputy Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau noted: “The Republic of Moldova is a country which started the democratic reform in the sphere of education and we fully support this. Education for democratic citizenship and human rights education is one of the priority areas of the Council of Europe. It focuses primarily on the emerging generation, enabling children and young people to become engaged and responsible European citizens who advocate human rights and participate fully in democratic life”.

During the training, the participants got acquainted with the basic principles and materials related to the model of Competences for Democratic Culture and developed recommendations and frameworks for the subject areas that will be applied to new secondary educational standards in 2018.

This training was carried out in the context of the European Union/Council of Europe Joint Programme "Promoting Human Rights Education and Democratic Citizenship in Eastern Partnership Countries".
