Advancing Roma inclusion in green jobs discussed

A meeting on Roma inclusion in the green and just transition brought together representatives of public institutions, experts and stakeholders to discuss how the green transition can create more inclusive employment opportunities for Roma communities.

The event provided a platform to share research findings on the role of Roma communities in the green transition and the challenges they face in accessing green employment opportunities.

During the meeting, participants discussed the results of a regional comparative study highlighting the contributions of Roma communities to the circular economy through activities such as waste collection, sorting, recycling and repair. Discussions also addressed barriers that prevent these contributions from translating into recognised green jobs.

Findings from a field-based situation analysis conducted in neighbourhoods with high Roma populations in Kocaeli and Sakarya were also presented. The analysis examined climate resilience and environmental vulnerabilities in these areas and explored how local living conditions and community structures influence responses to climate-related risks.

The programme included expert presentations and roundtable discussions on solid waste management, housing and urban renewal, energy and basic infrastructure and employment opportunities in green economy allowing participants to exchange views and identify possible policy and implementation measures to support a more inclusive green transition.

This activity was organised within the framework of the "Roma Integration Programme Phase III", a Joint Programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
