Improving legal access and human rights awareness in the Western Balkans

Notable progress was made in promoting human rights and raising awareness of European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) judgments. Law students gained hands-on experience through internships, enhancing their understanding and practical application of legal principles. Awareness-raising initiatives highlighted ongoing efforts to promote property rights and ensure equal access to justice, with events such as art exhibitions and panel discussions emphasising the importance of aligning national practices with European standards.

In this framework, to mark International Human Rights Day, the Council of Europe Programme Office in North Macedonia, with support from the European Union, organised an event to highlight the importance of equal access to justice and its positive impact on the people of North Macedonia. The event also featured the announcement of the winners of the visual art competition “Let’s Bring Justice Closer to the Citizens!”

The Tirana Legal Aid Society (TLAS) in Albania, with support from the European Union and the Council of Europe, organised an impactful awareness-raising event in Kamza, focusing on property rights and compensation mechanisms. The event was particularly targeted at vulnerable local communities, with the aim of increasing their understanding of legal processes and improving their access to essential services in this area. The event highlighted the importance of legal remedies for marginalised groups, in particular Roma and Egyptians, and their key role in ensuring equal access to justice for all.

Law students from Belgrade University who participated in internships at the Government Agent’s Office, gathered to discuss their experiences. The internship programme, initiated and supported by the programme started in 2022 and to date, 22 students have had the opportunity to work in the Office and gain valuable insight into how human rights cases are handled before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). The meeting aimed to gather input from the students on potential ways to further support and enhance the internship program.
