A Day in Kale Neighbourhood: Voices and Strength of Roma Women and Girls

As part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara visited the Kale neighbourhood, where Roma women and girls came together with representatives of the Ministry of Family and Social Services.

The visit opened with reflections on dignity, equal opportunities and the importance of hearing directly from Roma women. As the discussion unfolded, participants shared how these principles play out in their daily lives, speaking about the challenges they face in education, employment and access to essential services. Their voices offered a clearer picture of the everyday realities Roma women and girls navigate and highlighted where further support is needed.

A Roma woman who is a national athlete also spoke about her journey, offering a strong example of what determination and opportunity can achieve. Her story inspired many in the room, strengthening awareness of their rights and helping renew their hopes for the future. What began as a formal visit gradually became a space of motivation and connection, showing how personal stories can spark confidence and broaden perspectives.

The visit offered important community-based insights that will assist the Ministry of Family and Social Services and the Council of Europe in the development of future policies and initiatives.

This activity was organised within the framework of the "Roma Integration Phase III" Joint Programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
