On 19th December 2024, the Council of Europe Ankara Programme Office hosted the presentation of the “Roadmap for the Inclusion of Roma in Employment”, developed through the Roma Integration Phase III Joint Programme of the European Union and Council of Europe. The event brought together representatives from key central institutions, including the Ministry of Family and Social Services, to discuss the challenges Roma individuals face in accessing employment and to identify solutions for greater economic participation.
The meeting began with opening speeches from Pınar BAŞPINAR, Deputy Head of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Ankara, and Nevzat ÖZER, Head of the Social Cohesion Department at the Ministry of Family and Social Services.
The focus of the meeting was the presentation of the Roadmap for the Inclusion of Roma in Employment, which provided a platform for discussions on improving employment opportunities for Roma, a group that has historically encountered significant barriers in the labour market. The representatives stressed the importance of collaboration between central institutions to create a more inclusive labour market and ensure equal opportunities for the Roma community.
Key topics discussed included practical measures to address employment barriers, such as improving access to vocational training, offering targeted support programmes, facilitating transitions to formal employment, and promoting entrepreneurship. The roadmap also highlighted the need to tackle systemic obstacles and create a supportive environment for Roma inclusion in the workforce.
Participants expressed their satisfaction with the platform and agreed that a larger coordination meeting involving relevant ministries, international organisations, and Roma Civil Society Organisations would be essential to ensure the success of the proposed measures.
Following these discussions, the Roma Integration III Programme, in cooperation with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, will organise a larger meeting on 13th March 2025 in Ankara, bringing together all relevant stakeholders to continue advancing Roma inclusion in employment and work towards a more inclusive labour market.
