Training courses for legal professionals in Italy

Between June 2020 and January 2021, JUSTROM in partnership with the European Law Students' Association (ELSA) Italy, the Association for Legal Studies on Immigration (ASGI), the Naples Bar Council, LUMSA University, and the Rome Juvenile Court, organised a series of trainings for legal professionals in Italy, focusing, among others, on raising awareness on the work of JUSTROM programme, in the context of the new challenges presented by the COVID-19 global pandemic for vulnerable Roma communities, especially with respect to access to legal services. Other relevant topics discussed included the Italian framework of human rights of ethnic minorities and Roma, the issue of statelessness, and relevant legal proceedings in Italy to achieve regularization and access citizenship status for members of the Roma community.

All training sessions were held virtually as webinars broadcasted on Zoom or on the ELSA Italy Facebook page. In total, the webinars gathered around 300 participants from different backgrounds. More specifically, attendees of the different sessions included: members of NGOs such as CARITAS Naples, NEA Naples, ASGI; law students and young graduates from LUMSA University; lawyers and legal professionals from the Naples Bar Council; social workers and social care operators of the Naples-based NGO CASBA; honorary judges from the Juvenile Court of Roma; two representatives from the Romanian Consulate in Rome, and members of the JUSTROM Italy team.

JUSTROM Italy National Coordinator Ms. Maja Bova moderated the online webinars, accompanied by the project’s legal consultants, Ms Giulia Perin and Mr Valerio Maione. Among various guest speakers and experts, the trainings benefited from the contributions of Ms Marisa Esposito, president of the NGO NEA, Ms Jamahe Solis, president of the NGO CASBA, Ms Argentina Dragutinovic, JUSTROM facilitator in Naples, Ms Veneranda Nazzaro from the Naples Bar Council, Ms Helena Behr and Mr Enrico Guida from the Rome Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and Ms Alida Montaldi, president of the Juvenile Court in Rome.

The JUSTROM team in Italy noted that the seminars were well received by the large target audience, which will hopefully allow for the future development of a strong local network of legal professionals working on the issues addressed in the webinars.
