Second ELSA Italy-JUSTROM Webinar:  An Overview on Trafficking in Human Beings,  Especially Women and Girls, and Access to Justice

On Friday 12 March 2021, the joint EU/Council of Europe programme JUSTROM3, with UNHCR Rome Office, and the European Law Students Association Italia (ELSA Italia) held the second webinar of the series organized on the occasion of this year’s Moot Court Competition (XVIII edition), which will focus on trafficking in human beings, statelessness, and Roma women.

The second webinar addressed the issue of international trafficking in human beings, with specific focus on transnational criminal organizations and the impact of this crime on women and girls and their impaired access to justice.

Ms Elena Atzeni, Refugee Status Determination Associate at the Rome Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – UNHCR and Justice David Mancini, JUSTROM trainer and expert on trafficking in human beings, addressed the participants, provided them with an overview of the historical evolution of the phenomenon of human trafficking and discussed the contribution of the 2005 Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. It was highlighted that by prioritizing the protection of the human rights of the victims and survivors, this Convention and GRETA Group of Experts contribute to make progress in this area, with focus on inter alia the multi-agency approach and innovative case-law, including before the European Court of Human Rights.

The webinar was attended by a total of 75 persons - registered participants to this year’s Moot Court Competition, along with other ELSA Italy members.
