The South Programme II holds its second regional Steering Committee

The second regional Steering Committee of the South Programme II was held on 13 December 2016 in Nicosia, Cyprus. It brought together representatives from various ministries, institutions, and the academic sphere of the Southern Mediterranean partners (Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine* and Tunisia) with representatives of the Council of Europe and the European Union.

This second Steering Committee reviewed the work plan and the Programme’s implementation modalities, as well as the results and accomplishments of this joint initiative two years after its launch. It was preceded by a dinner-debate devoted to the subject of trafficking in human beings, hosted by the Presidency of Cyprus of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

The discussions highlighted the key role of the South Programme II in accompanying constitutional processes and democratic governance bodies; supporting the reform of justice; developing a common legal area between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean countries; promoting good governance through the prevention of corruption, money laundering and terrorism; whilst sharing good practices and fostering capacity building through the networks of the Council of Europe.
